Genetic Testing to Confirm Herbicide Resistant Weeds

The objectives of this project are to confirm the presence of herbicide resistant weeds in Horticulture cropping systems throughout Ontario and Quebec using the 12 genetic tests previously developed by researchers. This will enable growers to manage their resistant weeds in the same season, preventing the spread to adjacent fields and farms. Also, never reported resistant weed species can be detected allowing for new genetic tests to be developed

Late Blight Surveillance and Management in Field Tomatoes

Improve Pest Management of Onons, Carrots, Celery and other Field Vegetables

The objective of this project is to develop and evaluate aerial photography and drone technology for more effective field scouting and field trial assessments. Develop and evaluate effectiveness of disease forecasting and insect IPM using remote weather stations. Develop improved action thresholds for pest management of carrot insects, neck rot, stemphylium leaf blight of onions, carrot cyst and nematode and celery leaf curl.

Studies on the Distribution and Management of Carrot Cyst Nematode in Ontario

The objective of this project is to identify effective nematicides or fumigants for the control of carroty cyst in the field. Conduct a survey of carrot fields in Ontario to determine the presence and abundance of carrot cyst nematode.

Management of Clubroot on Brassica Vegetables in Ontario

The objective of this project is to determine the extent of clubroot in Ontario vegetable fields, identify pathotypes, screen vegetable cultivars grown in Ontario for resistance to pathotypes found in Ontario; evaluate rotation crops and cover crops that can reduce the population of the pathogen; develop methods to deal with small or new infestations.

Improved Pest Management of Stemphylium and other leaf diseases of Onions

The objective of this is to evaluate new fungicides for control of Stemphylium leaf blight of onion, as well as botrytis leaf blight; improve disease forecasting for Stemphylium and Botrytis; determine if Stemphylium fungus is resistant to commonly used fungicides. 

Improved Pest Management of Carrot Weevil and Carrot Rust Flies
